Abstract

This study examines patterns of social interaction among residents of Permata Insani Dormitory within a multicultural living environment. The dormitory accommodates students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, particularly beneficiaries of the Afirmasi Pendidikan Menengah (ADEM) program originating from Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor Bahru) and Papua. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings show that social interaction patterns in the dormitory are dynamic and context-dependent, characterized by alternating tendencies of mixing and grouping. These interaction patterns indicate that multicultural life in the dormitory does not result in complete cultural assimilation but reflects a flexible social dynamic consistent with the salad bowl perspective. Sustained daily interactions contribute to the development of social character, including tolerance, independence, responsibility, and cooperation, through shared living practices.
