Abstract

The Netherlands failed to defend its colonies following the arrival of Japan in Indonesia in 1942. What caused the Netherlands to fail to defend its colonies in the archipelago? What factors contributed to the failure? This research specifically answers this question. This research data was obtained through a literature review through analysis of journals, books, and news in the mass media. This research shows that before the Republic of Indonesia’s independence, there was a terrible economic crisis in the Netherlands starting in the 1930s. The economic crisis affected the political dynamics in the Netherlands kingdom and its colonies, where elite groups broke up. The elite conflict was also triggered when Christian groups managed to gain control of parliamentary seats and eliminate liberals and communists who had been in power for 50 years. The economic crisis, conflict, and division of elite groups in the Netherlands ultimately affected the colonial territory, making it difficult to control.  Where the elite broke out.
