Abstract

This paper discusses the diaspora carried out by the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra to the southwest coast of Aceh from the perspective of history and socio-cultural life. In its development, the Minangkabau community carried out cultural acculturation with the local community, an Acehnese tribe. This acculturation formed a new identity known as the Aneuk Jamee tribe. To answer this research problem, the historical method is used, which consists of four steps, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. This wave of the Minangkabau diaspora to Aceh had occurred since the 17th century when the Kingdom of Aceh succeeded in expanding its power to the coastal areas of West Sumatra, so that cultural contact had occurred with the Minangkabau people as indigenous tribes there. Furthermore, after the outbreak of the Paderi war, this diaspora wave is increasing because many Minangkabau people, as victims of this war, choose to migrate in search of a better life. In Aceh, the Aneuk Jamee tribal people are scattered by inhabiting residential areas on the west coast of Aceh.
