Abstract

Kerinci is an area far from the coast and location in the interior of Bukit Barisan, so it has difficult travel route for foreigbers to enter. However, the people of Kerinci still make contact with outsiders. The contact occurred when the Kerinci community itself left the area with the main purpose of conducting trade transaction. In 1903 the Dutch began to enter how the Kerinci Ekonomi are and fully controlled the Kerinci area in 1904. This articel attempts to explain how the Kerinci people faced the political-politocal hegemony by the Dutch East India Government carried out in this area in 1903-1942. This articel uses historical methods, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The articele belongs to the politicaleconomic history. This research shows that there is a response from people of Kerinci in facing the Dutch Colonial Government (the Depati Parbo War and the resistance of the Kerinci clerics). In addition, the emergence of new trade routes used by the people of Kerinci to avoid trade routes controlled by the Dutch. Inaddation, there were new trade commodities brought by the Dutch East Indies Government, such as tea in the Kayu Aro area and Kayu Manis in Bukit Barisan, and the establishment of a school in Kerinci.
