Abstract

Indonesia National History is often dominated by political figures, although in reality there are many other roles other than political figures who contribute to Indonesia National History and share a spirit of nationalism, one of which is that of Indonesian labourers who were brought to Australia by the Dutch government in 1942 after the Japanese succeeded in dominating Indonesia. Therefore, researchers try to research in order to conduct a review of the work of labor to complete one aspect of the problem as an integral part of national history. This study aims to examine the role of Indonesian labour in Australia in defending Indonesia’s independence during the 1945–1949 revolution. This study uses historical research methods with 4 research steps: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Heuristics or collecting sources using literature study in the form of primary sources such as newspapers in 1945–1949, biographical books, research results in the form of theses and journals, then the available sources go through internal and external criticism so that they can then be interpreted and then written history or historiography. The results of the study show that there are many roles played by Indonesian labour in Australia in defending Indonesian independence, in the form of strikes against Dutch ships, blockades of Dutch ships that are about to enter Indonesia, and even a diplomatic struggle through several labour and national organisations.
