Perkembangan Madrasah Diniyah di Indonesia: Kajian historis pendidikan Islam non formal

Education is a channel of Islamization that has a major influence on the development of Islam in Indonesia. Islamic education was developed in various levels of society in Indonesia, starting from the nobility, santri and ordinary people. Beside pesantren, Madrasah Diniyah have shown a very large role and contribution in non-formal Islamic education. To study the development of Madrasah Diniyah, historical methodology is the choice as the method used in this study. The steps of the historical research method used include four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results of this study indicate that Madrasah Diniyah have developed since their existence during the Dutch colonial period until the present. That were established as a counterbalance to Islamic religious education which was only given a very small portion in formal schools established by the Dutch government. The pattern of education was initially implemented in mosques or surau with the context of independence and the halaqah system. In the period after independence, Madrasah Diniyah then developed into something more systematic with the application of more modern management and implemented in a classical manner. The characteristics of Madrasah Diniyah are mainly focused on teaching the Qur’an and developing behavior as a good muslim.
