This article discussed Haji Agus Salim and its role in the effort to gain Indonesian sovereignty recognition in the Inter Asian Relation Conference event and the establishment of the Three Nations Commission (KTN). It used the historical method with an interdisciplinary approach. The results concluded several things. Firstly, the superiority of Haji Agus Salim in debating, a high sense of humour and a warm personality, cannot be separated from the cultural structure that raised him. As a figure that raised in Minangkabau tradition, Haji Agus Salim stands out in three respects, namely: clever in speech, dynamic and cosmopolitan. His dynamic nature gave birth to the Minangkabau overseas culture and made Haji Agus Salim a person who was good at adapting without being held captive by tradition in his native land. This in line with Minang’s expression: “Di mana bumi dipijak, di situ langit dijunjung”. In addition, the Minang’s culture engendered petatah-petitih culture, which is not only as a rhetoric art, but as an arena for thinking training and accumulating a unique local knowledge. In this case, Haji Agus Salim as heir from “words’ state” has used it to fight for the fate of his people. Secondly, with Haji Agus Salim’s participation in the Inter-Asian Conference which was followed by a diplomatic trip to Arab countries in an effort to obtain sovereignty recognition was appropriate. Besides being known as a diplomat, Haji Agus Salim is also known as a scholar who has extensive knowledge of Islam. With the signing of the Friendship Agreement between Indonesia and Egypt on June 10, 1947, it was a victory for Indonesian diplomacy. The recognition of Egypt and other Arab countries toward the Republic of Indonesia as an independent and fully sovereign country, thus all possible roads have been closed to the Dutch. Thirdly, with the Three Countries Commission (KTN) establishment effort, thus the Indonesia-Dutch problem became an international problem. The positive impact from Three Country Commission formation which consisted of Australia, the United States and Belgium, the inter-Indonesia-Dutch dispute can be mediated. This led to the implementation of the Round Table Conference which of was the Indonesian sovereignty recognition’s culmination from the Dutch.
