Abstract

Lekra (People’s Cultural Institute) as an organization under the auspices of the PKI which was established on August 17, 1950 was able to have many supporters among other similar organizations such as the National Cultural Institute (LKN) owned by the Indonesian National Party (PNI), the Indonesian Muslim Cultural Arts Institute (Lesbumi) owned by Nahdatul Ulama, and the Cultural Arts Institute owned by the Indonesian Party (Partindo). The review of this article uses historical methods which include the process of finding and collecting historical sources (heuristics), historical source criticism which includes external criticism to prove the authenticity of sources and internal criticism to prove the credibility and readability of sources, the process of interpreting or interpreting historical data and facts, and the process of writing history (historiography). The results showed that the existence of Lekra framed in Nasakom’s ideology was related to the mission of Persiden Soekarno during the Guided Democracy government. Nasakom’s ideology became Sukarno’s tool to maintain his power, free from coups and have full control over every political and state activity. Lekra’s activities that were able to attract many supporters from various backgrounds were supported by the large power of the PKI which was privileged by Sukarno, the gathering place of many famous artists and culturalists at that time, and Lekra’s people-based mission that made art a political medium for the Indonesian Communist Party.
