Abstract

The role of the Chinese in the history of the Hindu-Buddhist period appears in the Indonesian History textbook for class X SMA based on the 2013 Curriculum published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. The narrative is expected to discuss the values needed by students. For this reason, this study analyzes discourse practices built from the Chinese representations of Hindu-Buddhist material in the text book. The research used the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method according to Teun A. van Dijk. The results of the study show that the narrative in the text dimension presents the role of the Chinese in a straightforward manner in terms of trade relations, the use of historical sources, and the spread of Buddhism. Social cognition displays the perception of the Chinese as influential immigrants to the history of the Indonesian nation. The social context is confronted with historical facts which give recognition that the Chinese are part of the Indonesian nation. The conclusion of the research confirms that the representation of Chinese in Indonesian History textbooks on material from the Hindu-Buddhist era carries the value of respect for diversity. In order for the internalization of these values to be optimal, the role of the teacher is very necessary.
