Author Guidelines

Authors who wish to submit their manuscript to the Indonesian Journal of Applied Communication (IJAC) must adhere to the following guidelines. Manuscripts that do not comply with these requirements may be returned for correction before being considered for publication.

1. General Requirements

IJAC exclusively accepts original research articles within the field of applied communication; at this time, we do not accept commentaries, standalone review articles, or conceptual papers. Manuscripts may be written in either English or Indonesian, with Indonesian texts requiring abstracts in both languages while English texts require only an English abstract. The manuscript must be between 4,000 to 6,000 words in length (excluding references and abstract) and must not be under consideration by any other publication.

2. Authorship and Collaboration Policy

IJAC strictly does not accept single-author manuscripts. Every submission must be authored by at least two or more individuals to ensure a collaborative academic process and to enhance the depth of the research through peer-to-peer validation before submission. Furthermore, if the first author is an undergraduate or graduate student (S1/S2), the following policies apply:

  • Internal Students (UPI): Students affiliated with Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) are highly recommended to include a second author or co-author from a different institution. This cross-institutional collaboration is essential to ensure diversity of affiliation and institutional representation, which is a key indicator of scientific quality and breadth in national accreditation standards (SINTA).

  • External Students (Non-UPI): Students from institutions outside UPI are recommended to include their supervisors or lecturers as co-authors. This requirement is intended to provide expert academic oversight, ensuring that the methodology and theoretical analysis meet the rigorous standards of scholarly publication.

3. Manuscript Formatting

Manuscripts must be submitted as Microsoft Word files (.doc or .docx) using a single-column layout on A4 paper with 12-point Times New Roman font. Margins should be set at 3 cm for the left side and 2.5 cm for the top, right, and bottom sides, using single spacing throughout the text. Authors must use italics for foreign or regional terms (e.g., English terms in Indonesian texts or vice versa) and avoid underlining except for functional URL addresses.

4. Abstract and Keywords

The abstract must be a single paragraph of 150 to 250 words that fluently describes the research purpose, methodology, key findings, implications, and originality. Below the abstract, authors should provide 3 to 5 keywords that represent the core topics of the study, arranged alphabetically and separated by semicolons.

5. Systematic Structure

Manuscripts should follow the un-numbered section style with the following hierarchy:

  1. TITLE: Maximum 14 words, Capitalized, Bold, Centered (14pt).

  2. INTRODUCTION: Includes background, state-of-the-art (literature review), research gap, and objectives (15-20% of length).

  3. LITERATURE REVIEW: Critical synthesis of relevant theories and empirical studies.

  4. METHODOLOGY: Detailed description of research design, data sources, and analysis (10-15% of length).

  5. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION: Presentation of results and critical interpretation linked to theory and prior research (40-60% of length).

  6. CONCLUSION: Summary of findings, contributions, and suggestions for future research.

  7. ACKNOWLEDGMENT (Optional): Mentioning funding bodies or contributors.

  8. REFERENCES: Listed alphabetically at the end of the manuscript.

6. Tables and Figures

All tables and figures must be embedded within the text at the appropriate points and accompanied by a clear source line. Tables should use only horizontal lines in an open format with the title placed above, while figures must be high-resolution with the caption placed below.

7. Citations and References

Authors are strictly required to use a reference manager (Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote) and follow the APA Style (7th Edition) for all citations and the final bibliography. The reference list must contain at least 10 entries, where 80% are primary sources from scientific journals published within the last 10 years, including active DOI links where available.

8. Peer Review and Anonymity

IJAC employs a Double-Blind Peer Review process, requiring authors to remove all identifying information, such as names and affiliations, from the main manuscript file. All author details, including affiliations and the corresponding author's email, must be uploaded separately as a Title Page to maintain the integrity of the anonymous review.

9. Submission Process

Manuscripts must be submitted online through the OJS portal using the Official IJAC Template available at https://bit.ly/templateIJACUPI. For further inquiries regarding the submission process or editorial policies, authors may contact the editorial team via email at [email protected].

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or RTF document file format. The text uses A4 paper size with a 12-point font size. The margins are set to 3 cm for the left side and 2.5 cm for the top, right, and bottom sides.

  3. The manuscript is between 4,000 to 6,000 words (excluding references and abstract). It includes an abstract of 150 to 250 words written in a single paragraph, covering the research purpose, methodology, key findings, implications, and originality.

  4. The manuscript is written consistently in either Indonesian or English. For manuscripts in Indonesian, abstracts must be provided in both English and Indonesian. For manuscripts in English, only an English abstract is required.

  5. All foreign/non-mainstream terms are italicized. This includes English terms in Indonesian manuscripts, and Indonesian or regional language terms (e.g., Sundanese, Javanese) in English manuscripts.

  6. The text adheres to the systematic structure of the journal: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Findings and Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgment (optional), and References. Sub-sections follow the un-numbered visual hierarchy (Bold for Level 2; Bold-Italic for Level 3).

  7. All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points rather than at the end. Table titles are placed above the table, and figure captions are placed below the image, both including a source line.

  8. At least 80% of the references are from primary sources (scientific journals) published within the last 10 years. A minimum of 10 references is required.

  9. All citations and the reference list follow the APA Style (7th Edition). The use of reference management software (Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote) is mandatory. Where available, URLs and DOI links for the references have been provided.

  10. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Official Article Template. I have downloaded and applied the formatting from the template provided on the sidebar menu.
  11. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in "Ensuring a Blind Review" have been followed, specifically ensuring author names and affiliations are removed from the manuscript file.
