Abstract

At the beginning of the 20th century, movie theaters were still foreign to urban communities in Indonesia. As entertainment, cinemas were only enjoyed by the Dutch and people of upper social status. Thirty years later buildings for cinemas began to be built including City Theater, Oost Java Biosc, Djagalan Bioscoop, Luna Theater and Royal Theater. The existence of these cinema buildings illustrates that cinema is already present in Semarang. This research aims to explain the dynamics of cinemas in Semarang City after the recognition of sovereignty, and the reasons for people watching cinemas, popular genres in 1950-1964, until the 1964 Semarang cinema raid. This research uses the historical method which consists of heuristics, source criticism (verification), interpretation, and historiography. Through historical research, it is known that Semarang City cinemas after the recognition of sovereignty began to develop with the emergence of new cinemas, and the entry of imported films that attracted the attention of the public to come to watch, until the action of boycotting imported films because they were considered to have a bad influence.
